High school and college classes always enjoy the musical concepts and stories that come out of a session with Jim. He’s been part of both musical workshops (particularly with rhythm sections) and business seminars. With decades of experience in a wide range of settings, Jim is a terrific and entertaining instructor for clinics and masterclasses, and a great guest on panels.

Elementary classes

After having Jim as a virtual guest speaker for her class, award-winning educator Melissa Dent suggested Jim teach music fundamentals, and helped develop a two-part class, based around Ontario’s curriculum for grades four through eight. Each topic was followed by Jim performing a song to demonstrate the concept. “Music With Jim: Fundamentals” was a hit, with over 5000 students participating via YouTube Live in the weekly classes in the spring of 2022.

Jim continues to offer these classes, as well as What Is Jazz? (an introduction to the genre, including performances) and in-person appearances.

Private Study

If a student who already plays and reads music is interested in jazz, an online class with Jim is a superb place to start. As someone who studied classical music before focusing on jazz piano and arranging, he knows what you need to know to make the leap.
