Join us for a free, 45-minute ‘introduction to music’ class taught by award-winning Toronto musician Jim Clayton (bio here). The classes are upbeat, entertaining, easy to follow, and suitable for grades 4 through 8.

The class is an interactive live-stream on YouTube, on Wednesdays in February and March 2022, at 1:30 PM Eastern/10:30 AM Pacific. (Start times are one hour later for March 23 and 30.)

Jim also offers a second, follow-up class (topics are described below). Parts one and two are offered on alternating weeks.

  • Part one: Jim teaches the basics of musical notes (duration, pitch, dynamics and timbre) and demonstrates these concepts with song performances.
  • Part two: Jim explains rhythm, repetition, and song form/structure, with additional song performances.
  • The lessons and songs run approximately 30 minutes, and are followed by a 15-minute question-and-answer session, with teachers submitting students’ questions via the live chat.
  • Teachers can stream Music With Jim live in a classroom, or via a virtual-teaching platform such as Google Classroom or Zoom.
  • Teachers receive a slide deck designed by tech- and arts-certified educator Melissa Dent; the deck includes a lesson review, great online games that reinforce the concepts, and links to the original versions of the songs performed by Jim.

In January 2022, over 2400 students watched the first Music With Jim class, as it was live-streamed coast to coast to eighty classrooms. Here’s some of what teachers had to say:

“Jim was an incredibly engaging presenter. He spoke in simple terms so that all students could understand the fundamentals he was teaching.”

“That was amazing! Thank you so much!”

“Jim engaged the audience the entire time by playing us musical examples of the content he was teaching.”

“It’s really a blessing to have a talented musician take time to share their passion and knowledge of the musical arts with students. My students said it was the best music lesson they’ve ever had.”

Jim is also available for masterclasses, workshops and for private or group instruction via Zoom, Google Classroom and Facetime. For details, email
